Ewan McGregor: The Greatest Actor, that's never been nominated for an Academy Award.

Ewan McGregor should have a couple of Oscars. I think he should've been nominated for the following:

Best Actor:
Trainspotting (1996)
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Beginners (2011)
The Impossible (2012)

Best Supporting Actor:
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

With those nominations, I feel he should have won for three films, which are:

Trainspotting, Black Hawk Down and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

I'll try and summarize why I feel he should've won for these three films quickly, so I apologize if they're not as detailed as they could be.

For Trainspotting, he brought that spark that was needed to be light when things got to grim in the film, and to be serious when things may lean towards getting a bit ridiculous at times, as some of the characters actions show how the film could be over the top, but it pulls through. In the film, he plays a Heroin addict, named Mark Renton, that tries to get clean, meets a girl and basically tries to do what's right, but his friends, while some of his friends actions may have the right intentions, get in the way of his progress of getting clean many times. When he gets a good job, and his life starts getting in order after almost dying from a heroin overdose, his friends find him and convince him to go and sell some heroin for a decent amount of money.

[Spoilers are coming for this film, as to see how his character deals with all of these events that have unfolded, so you've been warned!]

Eventually, he can't take it and walks out with the money they made, while leaving a good portion to one of the characters who was the harmless of the group. All of this complexity helps sell the film and these and other reasons, I think should've won him an Oscar, at the very least a nomination, but we'd be here all day if I listed a lot of other reasons, as his performance, as all of his performances are fantastic. Just see Trainspotting and you'll see what I'm talking about and then some.

In Black Hawk Down, he embodies a soldier that wanted to fight on the battle field as he didn't think an office job in the Military was doing any good for America or the fight that's going on as they're helping the people of Somalia from the local Militia. He is chosen to take over for someone, when that person isn't able to go out into the city and he is given a bit of a grilling due to being a new guy going out into battle for the first time.
As we see his character, Grimes, he's basically us, the new guy, that doesn't know really what's happening, but listens to his superior officers in battle so the job gets done and to help other people from getting killed and/or injured on the American side. His character is a caring individual and just wanted to be part of something that mattered... We get to see how he goes from the egar guy behind the desk gets to go onto the battle field and see's how things aren't exactly what he thought they'd be.
All of this and the fact we could put ourselves in his situation does help a lot with the film and character. Basically, like Trainspotting, you should watch Black Hawk Down. It's a performance and film in which just talking about it doesn't do it justice. I feel should've gotten him another Oscar nomination and win.

For Star Wars, I understand that some would feel that McGregor is the lead in episodes 2 and 3, but the Prequels revolve around Anakin, so he'd most likely would've been put in the Supporting category in the eyes of the Academy. Not like an actor in a lead, hasn't been put in a supporting actor category. Pacino was the lead in The Godfather, but he was put in the Supporting Actor category.
And as people know about the character Obi-Wan, he trains Anakin Skywalker, played by Jake Lloyd in Episode I and Hayden Christinsen in Episodes II & III, and trains him to become a great Jedi, since Anakin is the "Chosen One" and he trains Anakin due to promising his dying master, Qui-Gon that he would. And we see a progression of his character from being a padawan to master in three films. He matures as the character and makes the character and films progress with ease. He plays the part with the dignity and sophistication that you'd want with Obi-Wan Kenobi. He gives his Obi-Wan, the manorisms and voice that is reminiscent of Alec Guinness, so that we belive his Kenobi, turns into Guinness' Kenobi when the character get's older.

So when it comes to Star Wars and Oscar performances, my thinking is, if Alec Guinness could get an Oscar nomination for the original Star Wars, which by the way I think Guinness should've won for that film as well, and was in the last two for a couple of minutes in each, why wouldn't McGregor, who helped add more depth to Obi-Wan over three films, get an Academy Award, or at the very least a nomination? Because I feel that McGregor gave more depth with Obi-Wan, especially since he's more of an essential character in the prequels. So say what you will about the prequels, but at least for one of the main characters, Ewan McGregor is possibly the best thing about them, aside from the connection of the prequels with the original films.

And I'm not trying to say Guinness was bad as Kenobi, he was phenomenal, but McGregor did help give Kenobi more depth that, while it wasn't asked, did help bring Obi-Wan more importance and you liked him more as you saw him develop in the three films. Also I believe McGregor's Kenobi becomes Guinness Kenobi. It was a tall order for someone to fill Guinness' shoes and McGregor took that character and went above and beyond with Obi-Wan.
All of these reasons, and more, I just don't understand why Ewan hasn't gotten an Oscar for any of these films or even at the very least a nomination. He should have some nominations and wins from the Academy. But he doesn't kiss ass in Hollywood.
Then again there are those actors that don't kiss ass in Hollywood, and as a result of their performances if it's strong enough and not because the performance has a political, social and/or artsy message in which sometimes actors do get nominated and some of them win for those dumb reasons. So I guess they don't like McGregor. I wonder who he pissed off, as that would be the only reason why he hasn't been nominated at least. It would make some logical sense that he did or said something that the Academy didn't like, therefore he has yet to be nominated. Maybe someday...
